At first need to know why do a website slow down? Many reasons have to slow down a website. Main three reasons are.
1. Use heavy size images
2. Use a lot of Javascript

Now at first need to fix the 3 problem. If you can do it, your site will fast 70% more. So let's know the about the three reasons.
1. Use heavy size images: We upload images from media manager in WordPress website. Don't upload images directly. Before uploading any image, optimize it.
If not, it's a transparent image, save it in JPG mode. If it's a transparent image, save it in PNG mode. You can optimize image through www.tinypng.org, I'm using the online tool 3+ years.
Use proper size image. Suppose you need 500x300 size image, you've uploaded 1000x700 size and after you have resized it with CSS. Avoid it. If you optimize images in the way, you can increase your website speed.
2. Use a lot of Javascript: A professional website can't make without Javascript. Most of the animation makes with Javascript andjQuery . But need to reduce Javascript usage. Which . js you're not using, delete them. When you're deleting, also delete the file name from header.php and footer.php.
Don't call much Javascript file name. Cause server will get request for every file, Try to keep all Javascript functions in one file. The request will send less, the website will super fast. Also, you can compress orminify your Javascript and CSS files. You can do it manually or you can use the WordPress free plugin Autoptimize, You can compress all HTML, CSS & Javascript with the plugin.
3. Database connection: Every website have database connection limitation. When a lot of visitors visit a website at the same time, sometime we get an error notification like that "Error establishing database connection".
So you need to also optimize database also. For database optimization and caching you can use WordPress popular free plugin WP Total Cache. Here have a lot of options. You can get tutorial about the plugin on YouTube.
